Welcome to the enchanting World of Magic!
I practice Magic and Hoodoo since I was a little girl and was initiated to our family tradition by my grandmother, so I am what one would call a "witch in the Hereditary Tradition". In Hoodoo terms, I would be a Rootworker.
What is Hoodoo?
Hoodoo, simply put, is the classical folkmagic as it is practised in Africa and around the Mississippi-area of America. But how is Hoodoo exactly defined? Hoodoo consists of different parts. The biggest and most extensive part are folkmagical techniques as used in Africa and America. Another focal point is an all-embracing knowledge about the magical use of various plants, minerals and other hoodooistic substances. A smaller part refers to European methods of magic.
Especially amongst African-Americans Hoodoo is fairly popular and is known under different names such as: Invocation, Witchcraft, Magic, Rootwork and "Laying Tricks". The term Rootworker labels someone who is using herbs and other items for magical purposes, and in doing so is supported and guided by his Spirits. Thus he/ she is also called a "twoheaded man/ woman", due to the fact that the Spirit borrows the Rootworker´s head to work through him. In Voodoo definition he would be "ridden" by his Spirit.
Someone who deals with Hoodoo and has gathered accordingly practical experience, is also referred to as Hoodoo Doctor or Hoodoo Man/ Woman.
Whence the word Hoodoo originated is rather dubious. Allegedly its first use was by Irish sailors who called jinxes and bad phantoms "Uath Dubh", which is pronounced Hooh Dooh. In the middle of the 19th century, ships struck by strange illnesses, were called "Hoodoo ships", meaning they carried misfortune aboard or were "hoodoo´d".
Some authors state that "Hoodoo" is derived from "Voodoo", but this seems to be highly unlikely. Voodoo is a west African religion which came to Haiti via the slave trade and developed there in its unique form. Hoodoo again is the magical folk-belief as it is lived out in central Africa. This misconception is due to the fact that especially white people tend to scramble the terms and definitions and reckon it is all the same. Generally Afro-Americans would not mistake both concepts.
When Hoodoo is called "Witchcraft", this refers in a European context to healing as well as malevolent magic. Whereas in America it often means only the black, malevolent side.
The term Hoodoo itself contains everything from love potions to protective spells, as well as drawing money and good luck.
Amongst the practising Hoodooists there are basically four groups:
Hoodoo Spiritual Doctor: He works on purely spiritual foundation and is able to break and heal magically caused illnesses by prayers and magical aid.
Hoodoo Healer: Cures normal illnesses, akin to a medicine man.
Hoodoo Fortuneteller: Sees in the future, finds lost objects and can find out what a person needs for her own spiritual progress.
Rootworker: Uses herbs and other materials for magic purposes. He is supported by his Spirits with whom he collaborates closely.
The production of Hoodoo articles can become extremely laborious. For most people it is difficult to procure all required components, as some of them have to be gathered from different countries, which makes the assembly of one single Hoodoo item rather costly. In addition, one still needs specific working devices, as well as the time needed. It is not enough to just merge the components, they have to be magically loaded, what only an experienced Rootworker can do.
Therefore, all of my products which bear the Nebelduft seal, will be handcrafted fresh by myself and will be loaded with magical power.
So these are no industrial made mass products without life energy and magical powers, but strong tools, which will dynamically support your magic.
Hence, the production can take up one to four working days.
Have a wonderful time ...
